Vegetarian Myth #19: Vegetarians can't wear leather.

Before anyone freaks out, my jacket is pleather/ imitation leather! I personally don't like wearing the real thing. However, there are some vegetarians and vegans who don't mind wearing real leather, fur, or other animal skins as clothing.

Fact of the matter is that we're only human and the beliefs that people have about vegetarians are only right to a certain extent. Some vegetarians are in the lifestyle because they want to be healthy, others use it as a diet to lose weight, some do it for health issues, and some (like me) just really love animals. So there's MANY reasons to be a vegetarian, which means that we all say "yes" and "no" to different things.

Just like fashion blogger and fellow vegetarian, Marlena, an occasional leather pair of shoes can be acceptable, but she'd rather get them thrifted than brand new. Read more about her here...

A vegetarian that chose this lifestyle for animals can own a wool sweater or a silk dress. Why do they think it's okay to wear real animal skin &/ or fur? Try to see this in an open-minded perspective, but the animal has already passed away and there is nothing that can be done to save them. Some people think of the idea as repulsive, but others see it more openly. Even so, most of the vegetarians and vegans who wear these garments don't buy them often. For more info on real animal skins, furs, and their alternatives, read my two previous posts: Shopping Nightmares: What really is vegan clothing? and Faux Fashion: Is it worth wearing?

  1. That is a really nice jacket. I have a funny story about leather. I don't like wearing it either but must confess my sofas are leather. One day I was talking to my son about it and I said 'I am only using the skin of the cow that you ate' and he replied 'no, I am only eating the meat that came out of your sofa'! Kids!

  3. because the animal has already passed away it's okay to wear its skin as an outfit? we live in a capitalist society and whatever you buy with your money is basically your vote of saying yes to its producers. in this case, yes, continue killing these animals for fashion. any person who calls themselves a lover of animals and continues to knowingly support companies like these needs to reconsider/reestablish their values.

    1. As I said, not everyone sees it the same, and you can think whatever you want about vegetarians who wear leather. But just because you believe that they should rethink their morals doesn't make you right. Not everyone will see things eye to eye; what could be right for you can be wrong to someone else, and that's okay. But to insult ones lifestyle can only take you so far. Glad you shared your opinion though; it further proves the point of this blog post.
